Behind the Shadows of Deception-Chapter 8
Mya inserted her key into the hole and let herself into the house. Rambo and Beaker immediately ran into the room and shuffled around her feet. She stumbled to regain her footing as they had almost caused her to trip and fall, “Hey, let Mommy get all the way in the house first...” She laughed good-naturedly.
Rambo barked trailing on her every step. Mya sighed; She must smell my damn food. She figured considering that the dog wouldn’t stop sniffing her bag. Beaker slid across the floor behind them as Mya attempted to outrun them to the kitchen.
“Down Rambo!” I should have never gotten a rottweiler. She held the bag of food over her head as Rambo attempted to stand on her hind legs and get the food.
The phone started ringing and Mya struggled to reach for it, but Rambo was circling her.
After three rings it stopped and transferred to the answering machine. “Hey Mya this is JC. I can see that you’re not home yet and you’re not answering your cell phone either, but I just wanted to call about hanging out tonight. If we’re still hanging out I’ll be there to pick you up around seven...uh talk to you later. Bye...” The continuous beep sounded after his call disconnected.
Damn! Mya huffed exasperatedly, “Well thanks a lot y’all.” She glanced at the clock it was 5:30. What! I only got like a damn hour! Mya looked down at her two “babies” who were lying at her feet sadly.
“Don’t look at me like that. Damn right, I’m mad, y’all done slobbered all over my lunch and I’m hungry as hell. If I wasn’t going out you two would be in big trouble.” Mya reprimanded, pointed her finger at them.
The two dogs whined sorrowfully. Mya softened, she could never stay angry with them. Bending down to their level, she draped her arms around them. Rambo and Beaker licked her face happily.
Mya stood to her feet and sighed, “I guess I’ll go shower and get ready now. Hunger will just have to wait.” Before she could make it to the bathroom, the telephone rang again. What now! Hell, the answering machine can get it. She decided that if she picked up the phone she would never be ready by seven, but what if was JC calling about something important. On that note, Mya decided to just go ahead and answer the phone.
“Hello?” She spoke into the receiver.
“Hey girl, it’s me.”
“Hey Eve, what’s up?”
“Nothing I’m just waiting for Keith’s triflin’ ass to come get Kechaun.” She fussed, referring to her son’s father.
Mya sighed, rolling her eyes. She realized that she’d never have enough time to get dress now that Evette had called. They had always managed to get so carried away with their conversations, that the time just flew by, especially when it came to the drama Eve was dealing with now.
“Eve you can’t call the man triflin if you want him to be in Kechaun’s life. A guy’s ego can’t stand that kinda criticism.”
“Well he can go then cause we both know his ass is still triflin’” Evette laughed
“True.” Mya laughed with her. She couldn’t help but remember when Eve had called her at two in the morning, talking a bunch of nonsense about how she was going to hop on a plane to come see her.
Mya had told her to stop joking since she had just finished performing and that she was tired, but Eve didn’t want to hear any of it. And sure enough, Eve had showed up at her hotel room, two hours later. She didn’t even bother with a friendly greeting, they had been best-friends long before then so it wasn’t needed or expected. She just came out with it instead. She was twenty-one, pregnant, her boyfriend was a low-life, and didn’t have a damn clue of what to do. At the time, Mya was nineteen, but the major difference between the two had been that she was paving her road to fame instead. Nevertheless,, aside from her occasional rash outings, Eve had managed to still pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer and portray the role of a single-mother fairly well. Mya was brought back to reality when she realized Eve was still ranting.
“What does Shaun need him for anyway? He’s cute and sure enough he’ll be a heartbreaker when he gets older. Not to mention he has a sexy, attractive, young and eligible mother...” Mya chuckled at her friend’s somewhat arrogant description of herself.
“...and you as a godmother what else does he need?”
“Nuff said Eve.”
“Mmm hmm, damn straight. Oh by the way Shaun is still expecting that trip to the zoo you promised him.”
“Oh yeah. I’ll take him when I go back to Maryland.” Mya confirmed as her eyes wandered to the Hello Kitty clock on her dresser. She had a little over thirty minutes left before JC would show up on her doorstep. She guessed she would have to settle for a quick shower, her hair in its natural curly style, and a pair of her favorite jeans with a designer shirt.
She hoped JC wouldn’t mind. Well he had told her some time last week that he wanted to take her on adventure, so he couldn’t be expecting her to dress up if he was planning to take her on that so-called adventure tonight.
“Eve I have to call you back later. I have to be ready in about 29 minutes.”
“Oh?” Evette wondered. “JC coming to get you?”
“Yeah. I promised him we could hang out.”
“Ol’ boy seems kinda lonely to me.”
“He’s in a band with four other guys, how could he be lonely?” Mya stated incredulously.
“Well yeah, that's done for now with their solo projects. So? He still taking you on that adventure?”
Mya just realized that she shouldn’t have told her about that. Every since then, Eve had been joking around with her about ‘how black people don’t do adventures’. Mya only laughed, figuring that Eve thought he meant a “hiking” or “camping” adventure. Honestly, she didn’t know what he meant either, but she’d find out later.
Mya got up from her bed. She knew Eve would never let her get off the phone to get ready, so why waste valuable time waiting for her. She pulled a pair of comfortable jeans, along with a shirt from her closet. She placed the telephone on the hook after pushing the speakerphone button. While Eve’s voice floated in the air, Mya settled for a quick shower, although she was yearning for a warm bubble bath to soothe her tired muscles. She was done in a record time of fifteen minutes, leaving the extra fifteen to blow-dry her curly mane. She would’ve preferred it to be straight since it was a little chilly outside and her hair, if it was straight, would keep her ears and neck warm. However, time wouldn’t allow it.
“Eve I gotta, okay?”
“He’s here isn’t he?” She teased.
“Not yet. He will be though.” Mya prepared to push the off button.
“You’ll tell me and Nessa ‘bout this when you get back.” She demanded before hanging up.
Mya laughed, plopping down on her bed, where she‘d wait before JC showed up.
Fifteen minutes later, Mya pulled her eyes away from the television screen and glanced at the clock again. She sighed, “He’s late.” Sure it was only fifteen minutes. But it was fifteen minutes of her precious time. Mya decided that if she didn’t hear from JC in the next thirty minutes she was going to give him a call.
Thirty minutes had approached quickly, Mya stood from the bed and looked out the window to see if he was in the driveway waiting for her. He wasn’t. She picked up the phone and dialed his phone number.
After three rings it went to his answering machine, “Hello this is JC I’m not available right now so please leave a message and I’ll get back to you.” A beep followed. Mya decided to leave a message and hopefully he would contact her.
Mya hung up the phone hoping that he would call her soon. Her wish came true thirty minutes later when the phone rang. About time! She hurried over to the phone and answered it on the first ring.
“Hello?”
“Hey girl it’s Ness.” Mya rolled her eyes; her friend was not the person she was expecting to talk to when she answered the phone.
“Hey Ness. How are you?” She tried to sound as convincing as possible without automatically sounded like she could do without this conversation right now.
“Oh yeah I was callin to-” Mya had cut her off before she could finish her sentence. She had more important things on her mind.
“Hey Ness let me call you right back okay. Bye.” Mya didn’t wait for her acknowledgement. She placed the phone back on the hook and quickly slipped into a pair of white air force ones before retreating to the living room. Where she waited another fifteen minutes before coming to the decision that JC would be expecting a visit from her. Mya searched for a piece of paper where she had recorded his address, when she located it she tucked in her purse and left the house.
